Boys Varsity Lacrosse Advances in OHSAA Region 3 Playoffs
Varsity Boys Lacrosse traveled to Gahanna Lincoln HS Saturday for a 5:00 PM first round Region 3 playoff matchup with the home team Lions. The game started out a little slow for the Vikings as they fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter. The boys began to chip away at the lead with some patient offensive possessions followed by some great fast break offensive strikes that helped the Vikings break the quarter open. At the end of the first the Vikings had taken a 7-3 lead. The second quarter saw things slow done as the teams traded goals to go into halftime with the Vikings still leading 9-5. After the half-time break, the Vikings offense and defense again established control and stretched the lead out further on the backs of a 4-2 run that saw the lead grow to 13-7 as the quarter ended. Lacrosse is a game of runs and that proved true in the fourth quarter as the Lions launched a run at the Vikings lead by scoring 4 quick goals, but again, the boys recovered and added 2 more to comfortably close out the first round playoff victory for a final score of 15-11.
The victory was easily one of the best team showings of the season and couldn’t have come at a better time being the first round of the playoffs. The offense spread the points around very well with contributions coming from: Jared Mayberry 4 goals, 2 assists; Quinn Kuehnle 4 goals, 2 assists; Kyle Cross 2 goals, 3 Assists; Joel Elder 1 goal; Luke Schultz 3 goals, 1 assist and Hunter Anderson 1 goal. Joel Elder, Austin Plowman, Alex Warren and Reece Bryant combined for 16 faceoff wins against 13 losses to help the offense maintain their edge. The base defense of Ryan Gilkison, James Fuller and Mathew Cornell played strong throughout the game with key contributions from Liam Pyle and Brice Hall. The LSM team of Andrew Engel, Trevor Achs, Henry Wasoski and Kyle Bryant added much needed faceoff support while several key players contributed strong offensive and defensive midfield play with Chris Schneider, Aaron Baker, Eli Sommers and Brody Osborne. In the cage for the Vikings, Zachary Noll recorded 13 Saves against 11 goals for a 54% save percentage.
A special thanks goes out the Gahanna Lincoln Lacrosse Program and Community for providing the team, coaches and bus drivers with food after the game. Gahanna set the bar high for how to host a playoff game for opponents who travel from over an hour away. A class group!
The Vikings now advance to the second round of the Region 3 Playoffs to face state power and #1 Seed Upper Arlington HS Tuesday, May 15th at 7:15 PM. The boys lacrosse team hopes to see plenty of Vikings fans in the stands as we take on the Golden Bears in Marv Moorehead Stadium. We thank all Vikings fans who have supported all our lacrosse programs in 2018. Your support is always appreciated! GO VIKINGS LACROSSE!!
